Ring in the New Year with Joy
In January, the Lower School comes together to celebrate the new year with songs, bells and a spirited countdown!
The assembly began with fourth-grade student leaders holding a mindful moment and then calling on students to share what they were doing when the clock struck midnight in the new year! Lower School Director Alice Moore followed up with a brief discussion around this year’s SEL theme of “Respect,” asking students to reflect on how they can build respectful relationships in their lives.
In music class, students had learned about Joya no Kane, a Japanese Buddhist event held on New Year's Eve when many temples ring a bell 108 times. At Burke’s, each grade level brought its mindfulness bowl and selected students to ring their bowl, hearing all the different pitches and timbres as they sent a positive thought for the new year.
The assembly ended with a four-part round of “Ring it In” and a rousing countdown ending with “Happy New Year!” Fourth grade joined in the fun with some repurposed bubble wrap squares to pop at the end of the countdown!
