The Young Entrepreneurs Shop (YES!) is an important part of Festival. It allows Burke’s Upper School students to experience entrepreneurship, and learn what it’s like to develop products, do branding and marketing, create a Business Plan, sell products, and complete a simple Profit & Loss Statement (P&L).
Students can choose whether they wish to create their own miniature business or embark on a joint mini-venture with friends. While providing a great deal of choice and autonomy, YES participants are supported and guided by volunteer parent/guardian YES co-chairs. Some of the businesses this year include Smilies Bracelets, Boba Bunnies, Bright Dreams, and C & S Spa & Co. To see a full list, click here.
Through a series of presentations, Lunch n Learns, and review sessions, students learn how to build their products and develop their own deliverables. The YES co-chairs guide students with a series of meetings, where they provide timelines for students to complete each step of their project, from initial ideas to paperwork to products in hand to payment processing systems and sales. Volunteers come in to offer a review of student business plans, which will include product descriptions, pricing, projected sales and revenue, costs, projected profit, and a marketing plan.
This year we have more than forty amazing student ventures! A quarter of the proceeds support Burke’s financial assistance program and faculty professional development.
We hope to see you on October 29 at Festival to support our student entrepreneurs!
