To prepare all of our students to thrive in an increasingly global community, Burke's is dedicated to building and sustaining a diverse and inclusive community with a strong and comprehensive multicultural curriculum. We believe diversity is essential for educational excellence. We strive to create a community in which learning from and with others who bring different backgrounds and lived experiences to our campus, and building critical thinking skills by considering information from a variety of perspectives, are the cornerstones for academic success. We emphasize the value of both similarities and differences as central for helping our girls grow beyond their natural tendencies toward conformity, underscoring our conviction that there are “400 ways to be a Burke’s Girl.”
Courageous conversations are essential for our girls, faculty and staff to relate to one another and their greater communities. Our intent is to both teach and model for students how to have dialogue, as well as to provide a safe forum for these dialogues to occur.

  • Semi-Annual Equity & Inclusion Survey

    Launched in Spring 2021, this tool is designed to inform us on how well we are living up to the promise of our Mission statements and measure the sense of inclusion and belonging of all Burke’s students. The students answer survey questions anonymously and data is collected and kept confidential. The survey is administered to all students twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. We are partnering with an external consultancy, Incluu LLC to confidentially administer and analyze the data from the surveys.   • Affinity and Alliance Groups

    Affinity and alliance groups provide an opportunity for students with similar backgrounds, experiences, and commitments to gather in a safe space where they can share pieces of their backgrounds and build common connection in their community. While meeting, groups may create educational opportunities for the community, discuss national and global events, and discuss topics that the girls may be grappling with. We hope that sharing their experiences with other students from similar backgrounds who they might not otherwise get to know will create a stronger sense of community for our students as well as a richer understanding of their own and others' stories.

    As we are aware that children's identities are constantly evolving, we encourage girls to attend as many groups over the course of the year as they wish. The students meet in small groups facilitated by faculty members and discuss topics derived from students’ interests. Both students and faculty participate in the discussions and activities. 

    Affinity Groups currently offered in the Upper School: LatinX, Black Heritage, Asian/Pacific Islander, Multiracial, Allies and Upstanders, Adopted, Gay Straight Alliance (referred to as GLOW), Neurodiversity, Jewish, and Divorced Families. Affinity Groups offered in the Lower School: Multiracial, Allies and Upstanders, and Neurodiversity.
  • Community Events

    Community Dialogues
    All members of the Burke's community are invited to attend these events. During the dialogues, parents/guardians and faculty/staff are invited to participate in a facilitated discussion around topics of diversity, inclusion, equity and community. These courageous conversations are designed to be a safe space to investigate and share ideas, insights, and different perspectives. Check for dates in the school calendar.

    BLEND Dinner
    Each fall, our families and employees join together for BLEND, a dinner to learn about and celebrate each others' identities and cultures. While it is a catered dinner, we invite and encourage families to bring a dish from their heritage. Click here for images from this year's BLEND Dinner. 

  • Faculty/Staff Affinity Group Committee

    This committee supports the success of our student-centered affinity groups, as well as supports the development of adult affinity groups within the community.
  • P.A. Inclusivity and Community Building Committee

    We believe that there are "400 ways" to be a Burke's family.

    The social, demographic, and cultural diversity at Burke's is a reason for celebration, but it is also a source of personal exploration, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. This Committee strives to support the Burke’s community by creating open discussions for inclusivity and diversity topics. It creates opportunities for sharing hopes, challenges, questions and ways to support your child and the Burke’s Community in these areas. The resopnsibilities of this committee incclude, hosting diversity-centered events, facilitating community dialogues, and leading discussions on books, films, and articles that highlight inclusivity and diversity topics.
