First Grade Shadow Puppetry

First graders brought shadow puppetry to life.
A fellow student and her parent introduced the Class of 2033 to the tradition of Turkish shadow puppets. They shared a classic comedic shadow play inspired by two real-life construction workers whose mischievous behavior once delayed the building of a mosque. The performance featured handcrafted leather puppets of the clever Hacivat and the playful Karagöz, accompanied by a tambourine and even a delightful dog puppet.

The first graders were captivated by the story, the characters, and especially the expressive theatrics of puppetry. Each child had the opportunity to step into the spotlight and improvise a short skit with the puppets in front of their classmates. Their storytelling quickly came alive with humor, creativity, and imagination—memorable moments included Karagöz chasing the dog across the screen.

Soon after, the first-grade class made their own shadow puppets of sea animals like dolphins and sea turtles. The wonder and joy of shadow puppets isn’t stopping anytime soon at Burke’s!
