4th Grade Calls for Change

The Class of 2030 showed their passion for improving their community with poetry!
The fourth graders’ poetry unit culminated in a poetry slam, where students did not merely read their creative writing aloud—they performed it, captivating their audience with spoken-word presentations. They played with the rhythm of words, rhymes, sounds, and speeds, pausing to let their point sink in or revving up a stanza to enhance dramatic effect.

Burke’s young poets riveted audiences with their creative visions and calls to action for community improvement, whether that means treating others with respect and kindness or doing our part to reduce global warming.

“Science is telling us the facts, and we must react and act, so let’s step back and look at what’s happening,” one student emphasized. “Did you know that the San Francisco sky turned orange from wildfire pollution? Did you know that a single wildfire can release as much carbon dioxide as hundreds of thousands of cars?”

At the end of every performance, fourth graders were met with loud cheers, claps, and jazz hands. Not only were the Class of 2030 talented and creative, but they also proved they were ambassadors of change, already exemplifying their vision of an empathetic community through their unwavering support for one another.
