The goal of the Burke’s Lower School Library curriculum is to prepare students to thrive as learners, now and in the years ahead. The program helps students to grow into competent, curious, creative, and confident researchers; open-minded and critical thinkers; productive, empathetic, and ethical members of the learning community; and enthusiastic readers.
Lower School Library experiences are often integrated with classroom and specialist studies. Those experiences are designed to be developmentally appropriate, supportive of program, inquiry-based, as choice-driven as possible, and meaningful to students. Experiences are structured to allow students to do the following:
- Enjoy curriculum-related books that are shared in Library or read independently
- Enjoy relaxed independent reading in a variety of categories
- Engage in literature and research-related activities
- Discuss issues related to information literacy and literature appreciation
- Gather information in a variety of ways (print sources, electronic sources, observation, data collection, human resources, etc.)
- Use a variety of research skills and strategies
- Make connections (i.e., text-to-self and research-to-self)
- Make wise book selections
There are opportunities for independent and collaborative learning in order to promote continual integration of new learning.Our Space
The Lower School Library accommodates classes for many learning activities — for example, hearing literature read aloud, viewing book-related videos, brainstorming around the Apple TV, practicing research skills and strategies, browsing, and borrowing. To those ends, the space has tables, chairs, and a reading area.
The Library welcomes Lower School students for independent research and study, recreational reading time, special recess activities, and individual exploration. Students can lounge in bean bags and the Burke Circ, browse through the shelves, and check out at the circulation desk.Our Schedule & Staff
Kindergartners-3rd graders come to the Library once a week for 40 minutes. Fourth graders come to Library once a week for 50 minutes.
