Burke’s is an independent K-8 gender-inclusive all-girls school located on a 3.5-acre campus in the Richmond/Sea Cliff neighborhood of San Francisco. Our mission is to educate, encourage, and empower girls. Our school combines academic excellence with an appreciation for childhood so that students thrive as learners, develop a strong sense of self, contribute to community, and fulfill their potential, now and throughout life. With 65% open space, our expansive outdoor campus is unsurpassed in the city. In addition, Burke’s is surrounded by open land that teachers regularly integrate into their teaching, including Lincoln Park, Land’s End trail, and China Beach. Our accomplished faculty members take full advantage of our outdoor setting and wide-open spaces to foster the learning, well-being, and social development of our students.

    In addition to competitive salaries, Burke’s offers full-time employees a compensation package with a wide range of benefits that include a medical plan, supplemental medical plan, a dental plan, a long term disability benefit, life insurance and a TIAA retirement plan for our employees. A brief description of eligibility, cost, and enrollment requirements for each plan is available here. Group insurance plans are subject to change annually.

We believe diversity is essential for a student’s journey to educational excellence. We are also deeply committed to providing social justice growth opportunities for our faculty and staff. Our Board, in partnership with staff/faculty and parent groups, has been engaged in a number of equity and inclusion initiatives impacting curriculum, governance, and student life.

  • Professional Development Opportunities

    Burke’s values social responsibility and lifelong learning and encourages faculty and staff to discover professional growth opportunities through local and national conferences, workshops, visits to other schools, summer institutes, and more.  Professional development opportunities are offered throughout the school year and faculty can also apply for grants to fund summer opportunities. The following are a few examples of professional development opportunities that our faculty and staff have attended in the last three years: NAIS People of Color Conference, Teachers College Reading and Writing Institutes, Mathematical Mindsets at Stanford, White Privilege Conference and Equity as Excellence
     
    The Burke's Professional Development Institute (PDI) brings leading trainers and organizations to Burke's for on-campus professional development the week after graduation. Offerings at past PDIs included an Investigations Math training, an "Inclusivity by Design" workshop, the Burke's EdTech summit, and a Service Learning Institute that integrated on-campus PD and service projects across the City. Burke’s believes in ongoing learning not only for our students, but our faculty as well.
  • Burke's Teaching Institute

    Burke’s Teaching Institute is a two-year program that provides on-campus training for our kindergarten through fourth grade and fifth and sixth grade science Associate Teachers.

    Associate Teachers are partnered with Lead Teachers who play a vital role in helping the Associate Teachers develop teaching skills. By observing and working with our experienced teachers and participating in the life of the school, Associates gain valuable experience as well as opportunities to develop their own philosophy and teaching style. Through regular pedagogical workshops, we provide Associate Teachers with information about teaching methods, curriculum development, assessment, and classroom management skills.

    Examples of recent Teaching Institute topics and discussions include: Social-Emotional Life of Girls, Exploring Anti-Racist Curriculum and System Inequalities, Supporting Diverse Learning Styles, Responsive Classroom Philosophy and Strategies, and Preparing Resumes and Interview Skills.
  • Transportation & Location

    Our coastal location is served by MUNI bus lines and all employees who work a minimum of 10 hours per week are eligible to participate in Transit Benefits up to $230 per month in pre-tax salary deductions for commuter costs including BART, Muni and CalTrans. 
     
    Many of our faculty and staff live outside of the city. Marin is a very close commute to the school, as are certain parts of the Peninsula.
