Sports Highlights Fall 2022

The Upper School after-school sports program gives all interested students opportunities to improve their skills, gain team experience, and compete in volleyball, cross-country, basketball, soccer, and futsol.

The winter season is in full swing, but we wanted to celebrate our fall sports athletes. This autumn, Burke’s had 137 student athletes competing in two sports, volleyball and cross country across 10 levels.

In volleyball, Burke’s had six league teams, in addition to a huge fifth-grade team, which was large enough to compete in two games most game days. The students played some very competitive games, with games won by two points in the third game, and games lost by two points in the third game. The balance of teams is in line with Burke’s philosophy, where we try to match ability with competition, so that student-athletes get an experience where they are being strongly challenged, but not overwhelmed. Playing at a level where our student-athletes can learn and improve allows them to get the most out of being on a team. All six of the league teams were very competitive in their divisions, going 6 for 6 with teams making semi-finals, and our 6th Grade Gold making the Championship game.

In cross-country, sixth to eighth-grade runners competed in both BAIAL races (Bay Area Interscholastic Area League) and were joined in the SFAL (SF Athletic League) meets by the fifth-grade team. Burke’s participates in two leagues, providing an opportunity for all runners to compete at a meaningful level, in a finals race. The cross country team took to the trails sporting their bright new uniforms, and the new look was backed up by competitive times and placings in our races across both leagues. The Varsity Green team retained their BAIAL title in a hotly contested race. In the SFAL finals, we claimed the runner-up spot in the 5th/6th division behind three individual medalists and claimed third place in the 7th/8th division behind a balanced team effort.
