Masks with a Mission: 4th Grade Art

Think Covid-19 masks have to be boring? Think again. Ms. Herman’s fourth grade class created their own custom masks with a dual focus: fun and a positive message.

This year, fourth graders transformed ordinary Covid-19 masks into wearable works of art. They began by brainstorming original designs, and then drawing those designs onto blank masks with designs ranging from butterflies to stars, with some abstract designs thrown in for good measure. The images were transferred onto white fabric masks with a pencil and fabric markers and green-screen technology was used to bring in a background image to enhance the mask and its message.

In the second mask project, students explored how the Covid-19 mask has been used as a powerful tool for communication. Students examined various images of Covid-19 masks designed to send a strong social and political message and analyzed the ways that elements of art, including size, shape, and color, have been used to create memorable and striking compositions. For their personal projects, they brainstormed a list of social and political issues that were meaningful to them and designed their own Statement Masks. The results were educational, encouraging and empowering!
