Sixth Graders’ STEAM Triumph: ExploraVision 2021

Burke’s sixth graders participated in the Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Competition, and came away with flying colors!

Three project teams received an Honorable Mention, and Burke’s was one of two schools in California that received this distinction.
All of this year's projects are listed below, with the three honorable mentions noted with an asterisk (*). Students worked in teams of two to three to  showcase their imagination, creativity, and scientific understanding.

Rabic: Prevention of bike accidents using radar. (Saya D., Nayalin L., Zoe M.)

Change Truth: BLM/Social Justice app that teaches individuals about the many historical monuments and landmarks around the U.S., providing an authentic way of learning that accommodates learning differences, cultural and social backgrounds. (Aisha M., Brooke B.)

AXESS tech: Environmental focus, specifically around earthquakes. (Kiyomi D., Diana J., Paloma S.)
 
Di-Nano: Medical tech that uses nanobot technology to target cancer cells, and carry insulin.  (Alexa C., Martina M.)
 
S.N.R. (Steroid, Nanotechnology, Regrowth): Uses SNR to address hearing loss by regrowing and healing damaged hair cells in the ear. (Emma J., Anya K.)
 
A.V.E.B.S. (Airborne Virus Environmental Blockage System)*: Nasal nanobots that detect viruses through recognition technology and kill them off over time. (Brooke D., Mila F., Mackenzie R.)
 
TONED: Addressing strokes with a carotid artery patch that would track blood pressure, heart rate, etc., consistently. (Elsa E.R., Emma H., Lucy L.)
 
CCFC: Addresses water scarcity with water electrolysis and chemical cloning to create water. (Sophie B., Tatum C., Sophia L.)
 
N.M.C.B. (Nano Magnetic Coil Bots): Addresses excess plastic issues. (Mazzy B., Aleema B., Lauren L.)
 
HDP (Huntington's Disease Protection)*: Focuses on Genetic diseases, specifically Huntington's with a nanochip that will untangle and release the nucleotides back into the body, targeted specifically to the Huntington gene in order to ensure that the HD mutation is gone. (Lily G., Helena S., Thalia V.)  
 
N.A.T.U.R.E (Nature Artificial Trees Using Robotics and Energy): Addresses climate change with Artificial Trees that turn carbon into pure oxygen using Artificial Photosynthesis. The trees will be made out of steel, tubes, air filters, and solar panels. (Leily A., Vanessa M., Ella P.)
 
BIRD (Biocarbon Imitation Retainment Device): Focuses on climate change, specifically capturing CO2. This technology uses metal organic frameworks, artificial intelligence, Bluetooth, copper nanowires, and sensors to create an artificial pigeon that absorbs CO2. (Ellie A., Abigail M., Amalia V.)

S.A.F.E (Security Attainment For Food Everywhere)*: Addresses food spoilage and poisoning. (Violet J., Elin B.)
 
Micro-M.O.V.E. (Microchip Onboarding nerVe Electronic): A form of technology that would help patients paralyzed by nerve cell or spinal cord damage is a pair of microchips. The signals absorbed by the chip in the brain would be transmitted through radio waves, or Bluetooth technology, to the microchip in the paralyzed body part. The microchip in the body would then send out signals received from the brain to the paralyzed muscle, allowing the muscle to function normally. (Bree B., Scarlett P., Coco R.)

A.H.A (Amygdala Hippocampus Aid): Focuses on recovery/mental illness with an app and Vitamin b12 monitor. (Kate B., Kara H., Blair K.)
 
Tumor Tracker Brain: A neurochip transmitter that can map the brain and find tumors, to help reduce the side effects of radiation by being more precise and in lower concentration. (Anya A., Sophy L., Mia S.)

E-Med: Addresses ADHD with an insulin pump-like object that is to be paired with a Bluetooth watch to identify what medications, chemicals, or other drugs will be needed to help a person focus and address their ADHD. (Lily B., Quinny C., Clea T.)
