Burke’s Celebrates Community with BLEND

An event to remember!

On a warm autumn Sunday, Burke’s Inclusivity and Community Building Office, in tandem with the Parents’ Association’s Inclusivity and Community Building Committee (ICBC) and Parent Education Committee, created an unforgettable BLEND event.

Instead of the usual potluck dinner, Burke’s community members were joined by renowned photographer Angélica Dass via Zoom, for a specially-crafted art project, based on her Humanae project. The Humanae project explores humanity's true colors through a global palette of multi-hued skin tones.

Burke’s families, faculty, and staff were invited to the Campus Center to create an artistic mélange of engaging self-portraits. Students mixed and matched paint colors to create their unique skin tones while listening to Dass provide intricate instructions about the process of making one's skin tone. She shared how she felt as a child when only given a "peach" color in school when drawing people, and how that experience has influenced her artistry to this day.

BLEND is always a wonderful way to start the year — and it was even more special as we continue to navigate the complexities of the pandemic. As a community, Burke’s seeks to  celebrate each person’s similarities and differences with the ongoing intent of strengthening our connection with each other. Check out the photo album here!
